Releases in the Lower Danube

As of Spring 2025, the floating hatchery on the Danube in Vienna is officially in operation and has successfully launched this year’s sturgeon reproduction by rearing Russian sturgeon and sterlet.

To date, approximately 55,000 feeding fry and 1,400 young-of-the-year (3–5 cm) Russian sturgeons have been released into the Lower Danube in Romania. Additionally, 15 beluga sturgeons were released in the Lower Danube in collaboration with the Project SOS Sturgex.
