The project team at BOKU, together with partners from Hungary, successfully released over 242,000 young sterlets into the Austrian Danube and its tributaries – more than one-third of the planned 700,000 by 2030!!! This marks a major milestone: 500,000 released sterlets in total, including those from our predecessor project, LIFE-Sterlet.

The fish are specially marked for optimal research success: β€œIn order to recognize the animals during monitoring, we equip them with colour markings and PIT tags once they reach a certain size. At the same time, we keep some sterlets in our ponds as breeding stock in order to ensure sustainable juvenile fish in the Danube,” explains project manager Thomas Friedrich.
